Superintendent of Schools in Cheney, Washington state Ben Ferney said in a letter that the student had been “severely injured” in a “tragic accident” during physical education class.
The Cheney Fire Chief told KXLY that shortly before 2 p.m., paramedics were rushed to the school after reports of an impaled and unconscious male.
The Cheney School District has chosen not to elaborate on the issue.
On Friday, classes continued as usual, but students were encouraged to reach out to others for help as they dealt with their grief over Bahme’s death.
Ferney urged anyone who “feels the need for support from one of our counselors” to contact the school’s counseling department.
Bahme’s aunt, Holly Bahme Goodman, took to social media to express the family’s desire for privacy at this difficult time.
Goodman has set up a GoFundMe to assist with funeral costs and other pressing expenses.
